Glenn's Diner

Glenn's Diner
1820 W. Montrose Ave.
773-506-1720

I first reviewed Glenn's Diner on Metromix on August 2nd.

I've been back for breakfast, which I really enjoyed. My Friend's and I returded for dinner there this past week.

From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were home. Lou was our attentive server. The Food was excellent. The Soup Starter was very hearty. For the entree, two of us had the Walleye, and a third had Perch. And we shared a bowl of Mac & Cheese. Talk about a total comfort food experience.

Glenn's is still tops on my Diners List and fulfills my criteria for Food, Value, and Service.

Skylark (Pub & Lounge)

First reviewed on Metromix on April 29, 2006

Skylark is located at 2149 S. Halsted St.

Very cool place to eat, unwind, and hear some atypical music. I actually read about it while searching for a new S. Loop place to eat. The Fried Chicken, Collard Greens, and Sweet Potato Casserole was very filling. And the DeKonnik Beer was just what the doctor ordered. I will definitely be back

Rise

Let me start off by saying,

"Brown Rice"

I went to Rise with my date Cinnamon Girl this past Sunday. It was her suggestion.

As is customary before trying out a new restaurant, I first check them out on Metromix to see what others are saying. Talk about mixed reviews. To be honest, I was now a little worried.

My date and I were promptly seated upon arrival (6:00 PM), and the busboy came by with the water, and the waiter soon after to ask us if we'd like a drink.

We started with 2 appetizers: Cucumber Salad & Spinach Salad. Both were very good

For the entrees, we shared a roll off the Specials Menu, and a Mexican Roll, Salmon Roll, Tamago, and Namasake off the Main Menu. All were very good. But what I really enjoyed was that I could enjoy each selection made with Brown Rice.

Sushi with Brown Rice is slowly catching on here in Chicago; I have a feeling that you'll hear about it more and more. and if your local Sushi House doesn't serve it yet, ask for it.

My satisfaction indicators are:
1. Does it satisfy my health consciuousness?
2. Was the quality of the food what I expected?
3. Was the service what I expected? and
4. Did I leave believing that I received value for my money?

The answer to each is a resounding...Yes. Enjoy Rise

Noon O' Kabab

After seeing this venue on WTTW's Check Please, I couldn't wait to go and try it out. I was not disappointed. The food was excellent, wheher it was the Lamb, Chicken, or Beef. I especially enjoyed the smokey Baba Ganoush Starter. My satisfaction indicators are
  • Does it satisfy my health consciuousness?
  • Was the quality of the food what I expected
  • Was the service what I expected
  • Did I leave believing that I received value for my money

The answer to each is a resounding...Yes

Eleven City Diner

Have to agree with Wayne's June 29th review. I'm getting used to the decent portions of food coming out wrong: A request for well-done Rye barely toasted; and a Corned Beef Reuban coming out with Pastrami instead. But it is now a must go-to S. Loop eatery, and at least the management stops by to see how everything is.

A welcome addition to the neighborhood. I've been there 4 times plus one carryout. The food is good, though who assumes someone wants mayo on Turkey & Swiss. The value:dollar ratio is good. The owner appears intent on getting or making things right, and his mom/dad around there is a nice touch. Once they get the kinks out with the mediocre wait staff, I'd be prepared to give it a 3 Star rating

Great!!!! Another mediocre bar/restaurant in the S. Loop. What is it about Owners and Managers that they can't come by to see how everything is. The service was virtually non-existent; My friend's Portabello Sandwich and my Burger were good, the Sweet Potato Frys on my plate were a paltry few, and the Mojiot's were....I don't know what they were.

This is the next restaurant that you have to try. The food is outstanding. I’ve had their Fajitas, Salmon, and Tostones. My only complaint is the $6 corking fee and the plate sharing fee. Maybe I haven’t experienced BYO enough—this is what my friends say, but it does come across at pretentious, especially in a venue this size and intimate. It’s just a matter of time before “Check Please” pays a visit, so get there quick.

Solo 1530

Entered as a review on Metromix on November 23rd, 2005

Can't wait for an established eatery like Kroll-Chicago to open in the S Loop. While trying to be South Beach Phase II observant, I opted for the Chicken Vodoo Lala...or something like that. I asked if they could make the dish without the pasta, and perhap throw in a little sweet potato on the side. No problem they said What I was served was a minature 1/2 chicken breast and a heeping order of Sweet Potato on the side. Mental note to self...Don't try that again. What I ended up with was a $31.90 bill before tip (Entree - $17; Sweet Potato - $6.90; and glass of Pinot - $8.00). The bartender was very pleasant, though the managers who were in the house, were non-existent on this pre-Thanksgiving evening. Like I said at the onset, Krolls won't open soon enough. the same should be said for Solo 1530's demise.
